What this laser is, how its two wavelengths and built-in cooling work, who it suits, and the honest limits of even the best machine, from the person who has run one for over 15 years.
The Candela GentleMax Pro is a laser hair removal platform that carries two wavelengths in one system: Alexandrite 755nm for lighter skin and Nd:YAG 1064nm for deeper skin tones. It has built-in cooling to help keep each session comfortable. Because we can switch wavelengths for the person in the chair, it suits all six Fitzpatrick skin types. It is one of the two lasers we run for laser hair removal in North York at Distill Laser Clinic.
A word from Swaleen before you read on
I have used the Candela GentleMax Pro for over 15 years, and I have trained hundreds of clinicians across Canada on how to run it properly. In my experience, it is one of the two laser hair removal platforms worth trusting, and we run both of them at Distill.
So here is the part other clinics leave out. Even the best laser on the market cannot promise you results for life, and I will not promise that either. What this machine delivers, in the right hands, is long-lasting hair reduction: far less hair, finer regrowth, and, for most people, a maintenance session once or twice a year. If a clinic tells you any laser gives you smooth skin forever, that is a sales line, not a clinical fact. I would rather you knew that before you paid.
What the GentleMax Pro is
The Candela GentleMax Pro is a high-power laser workstation that combines two separate lasers, an Alexandrite and an Nd:YAG, into a single system. It works through a process called selective photothermolysis. In plain language: the laser sends a focused pulse of light into the skin, the pigment in the hair absorbs that light, the light becomes heat, and the heat disables the follicle that grows the hair, while the settings and cooling limit heat in the surrounding skin.
The platform has been in clinical use for well over two decades and is one of the most widely used hair removal lasers in the world. We chose it for Distill because of that track record, its power, and its two wavelengths, which let us treat the full range of skin tones we see in a city like Toronto.
The two wavelengths and when we use each
Carrying two wavelengths in one system is what makes the GentleMax Pro useful for a clinic that treats everyone. We choose the wavelength for your skin, not the other way round.
Alexandrite 755nm
- Strongly absorbed by melanin, the pigment in hair
- Our choice for lighter skin, Fitzpatrick types I to III
- Works best where dark hair sits on light skin
- Effective on fine to coarse hair rooted close to the surface, such as the face and underarms
Nd:YAG 1064nm
- A longer wavelength that reaches deeper into the skin
- Much lower absorption by the pigment in the skin itself
- Our choice for deeper skin tones, Fitzpatrick types IV to VI
- Reaches dark, coarse, deep-rooted hair while passing more safely through the surface
If you have ever been told your skin was too dark for laser, that was true of older single-wavelength machines. With the Nd:YAG set correctly, Distill treats deeper skin tones every week. Our article on laser hair removal for different skin and hair types explains what to expect for your tone and hair colour.
How the cooling works and what a pulse feels like
The GentleMax Pro has built-in cooling to help keep each session comfortable.
We will be honest here, because this is the question people ask quietly. Laser hair removal always involves some sensation, and any clinic that calls it comfortable for everyone is not being straight with you. Most clients describe each pulse as a warm pinprick or a quick snap, like an elastic band against the skin. Built-in cooling helps keep each session comfortable. Some areas are more sensitive than others, and most people find each session easier than the last as the hair thins. The full zone-by-zone account is in does laser hair removal hurt.
Which skin tones and hair types it suits
The GentleMax Pro suits all six Fitzpatrick skin types because we can choose between the Alexandrite and the Nd:YAG for every client, from very fair to very dark skin.
Skin types I, II and III carry little pigment at the surface, so we treat them with the Alexandrite 755nm. It works best on dark, pigment-rich hair. If your hair is blonde, grey, red or white, there is not enough pigment in the follicle for any laser to find, and we will tell you plainly at your consultation that laser is not the right tool for that hair.
Skin types IV, V and VI carry more pigment at the surface, so we treat them with the Nd:YAG 1064nm. Its longer wavelength passes through surface pigment and delivers energy to the follicle, lowering the risk of burns and pigment change that older lasers carried for deeper skin tones. It works well on coarse, thick, dark hair.
One rule holds for every skin type: we do not treat a fresh tan. Sun exposure or self-tanner in the two weeks before a session raises pigment in your skin and increases your risk of a burn, so we reschedule rather than treat.
Which areas we treat with it
We use the GentleMax Pro on almost any area where you want long-lasting hair reduction.
- Face: upper lip and chin. Hormones often drive facial hair, so these areas need precise targeting and sometimes a longer plan. See facial laser hair removal.
- Large body areas: back, shoulders, arms and legs. The GentleMax Pro can use large spot sizes, so we cover these areas efficiently. See full body laser hair removal and laser hair removal for men.
- Sensitive areas: underarms, bikini and Brazilian. Built-in cooling helps keep these zones comfortable.
GentleMax Pro vs our Clarity II: why we run both
We do not rely on one device. We run two dual-wavelength platforms at Distill: the Candela GentleMax Pro and the Cynosure Lutronic Clarity II. Each has strengths, and having both means we never have to compromise on the tool for your hair.
The GentleMax Pro pairs high peak power with built-in cooling. That combination is our pick for dense, coarse, stubborn hair, where deep energy delivery matters most.
The Clarity II uses a different cooling approach and carries motion-sensing rollers in the handpiece that track how fast the clinician moves, adjusting the pulse rate to keep coverage even and avoid missed spots. It also offers a very short pulse setting designed for fine, thin hair. That makes it our pick for large areas that need fast, even coverage, and for later sessions when only fine residual hair is left.
On the day, we look at your skin and your hair and choose. Thick, dense hair often gets the GentleMax Pro. Fine hair, or a large area, often gets the Clarity II. Many clients see both platforms over the course of a plan, and that is by design. Read more on our Cynosure Lutronic Clarity II page.
"I have run this machine for over 15 years and trained hundreds of people on it. It is one of the best lasers in Canada, and it still cannot promise you smooth skin for life. Anyone who says otherwise is selling, not treating."

What to expect: sessions, spacing, shedding
Laser only works on hair in its active growth phase, called anagen, when it is connected to its follicle. Only a share of your hair is in that phase at any one time, which is why laser hair removal is a course of sessions rather than a single visit.
Sessions
Most clients need 6 to 8 sessions. With PCOS or other hormonal hair growth, plan on 8 to 12, because hormones keep recruiting new follicles during the course. See laser hair removal for PCOS.
Spacing
Face sessions run 4 to 6 weeks apart. Body sessions run 6 to 8 weeks apart. The gap matches each area's hair cycle. Read how many treatments laser hair removal takes for the breakdown by area.
Shedding
Over the one to three weeks after a session, treated hairs loosen and slide out of the follicle. It can look like regrowth, and it is not. Let it fall on its own. Do not pluck or wax it.
Cost
Sessions start from $55, and the consultation is always free. A patch test is available following your consultation. The full price list by area is on our laser hair removal pricing page.
Safety and who should wait
Laser hair removal has a long safety record when the right wavelength and settings match the right skin, and we do honest screening first. Sometimes the answer is not yet.
- An active skin infection, an open wound, or a cold sore outbreak in the treatment area means we wait.
- A recent tan, a sunburn, or self-tanner in the past 2 weeks means we reschedule.
- Recent isotretinoin, the strong acne medication, means we ask you to wait at least six months after finishing your course.
- We do not treat you if you are pregnant.
We review your medical history, your current medications and any history of scarring before we begin. Our article on laser hair removal side effects covers what is normal after a session and what is not.

How many sessions will I need with the GentleMax Pro?
Most clients need 6 to 8 sessions for long-lasting hair reduction with the Candela GentleMax Pro. With PCOS or other hormonal hair growth, plan on 8 to 12, because hormones keep stimulating new follicles over time. Face sessions are spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart and body sessions 6 to 8 weeks apart.
Does the GentleMax Pro hurt?
It is generally well tolerated, but you will feel it. Most clients describe each pulse as a warm pinprick or a quick snap, like an elastic band against the skin. The GentleMax Pro has built-in cooling to help keep each session comfortable.
Can the GentleMax Pro treat dark skin?
Yes. We treat deeper skin tones with its Nd:YAG 1064nm wavelength, which is absorbed far less by skin pigment and delivers energy to the follicle underneath. That is why the platform suits all six Fitzpatrick skin types. We match the wavelength and settings to your skin at a free consultation, and a patch test is available following your consultation.
How much does laser hair removal cost at Distill?
Sessions start from $55 at Distill Laser Clinic in North York. Your total depends on the area size and how many sessions your hair needs, and packages cost less per session than paying one at a time. The consultation is always free, and we put your plan in writing before you commit to anything.
Is there downtime after a session?
Most clients return to their normal day right away. Mild redness and slight swelling around the follicles, similar to a light sunburn, are normal and usually settle within a few hours to a day. For the first 24 to 48 hours, avoid heat, hard workouts, and sun on the treated area.
What should I do before a GentleMax Pro session?
Shave the area 24 hours before, and do not wax, pluck, thread or epilate for 4 weeks, because the hair must be in the follicle for the laser to find it. Stay out of the sun and off self-tanner for 2 weeks. Arrive with clean skin, no lotion or deodorant on the area, and tell us about any medications you take.
