What Price Shopping Really Cost One Laser Hair Removal Client

A real client, shared with her consent, on what three years of jumping between laser hair removal deals in Toronto added up to before she committed to one course at one clinic.

The quick answer

A Groupon laser hair removal deal is usually not cheaper in the end. When you buy a discount package here, another there, and a third somewhere else, every new clinic starts you from zero on a different machine with no record of your settings. One client I treated spent three years and more than $1,400 this way and still had hair. One full course with one aesthetician, on medical-grade lasers, finished in seven visits over nine months.

Key takeaways

  1. Discount packages often run on IPL or low-power diode devices. These can thin hair for a few weeks without reaching the follicle, so the hair returns and you have to repeat the package.
  2. Each time you change clinics, the new provider has no record of your past settings or your hair cycle, so your session count restarts.
  3. A lifetime guarantee is a sales line, not biology. Hormones can wake dormant follicles years later, so honest clinics plan for touch-ups instead of promising forever.
  4. One consented client spent more than $1,400 and over 20 appointments across three deal packages and still had patchy regrowth.
  5. Her course at Distill took seven sessions over nine months on the Candela GentleMax Pro and Cynosure Lutronic Clarity II, with one aesthetician and one plan.

Why the $199 laser deal is not the same treatment

I have been performing laser hair removal in Toronto for more than 20 years. The clients who arrive most frustrated are the ones I call deal jumpers. They start with a coupon, then another coupon at a different clinic, and by the time they reach our door, they have paid for three packages and are not sure any of it worked.

On paper, the deal looks smart. A full-body package for $199 sounds like a bargain compared with clinic pricing. The catch is that the price is rarely the problem. The machine is.

Not every hair removal device is a laser. Many discount packages run on Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) or low-power diode units. IPL is not a true laser. It sends out a wide spread of light that warms the surface of the skin but does not deliver the focused energy needed to reach the base of the follicle. I cover the difference in detail in IPL vs laser hair removal.

Medical-grade platforms work differently. The two we use, the Candela GentleMax Pro and the Cynosure Lutronic Clarity II, each combine two true laser wavelengths: 755 nm Alexandrite for lighter skin and 1064 nm Nd:YAG for deeper skin tones, which is how we treat all six Fitzpatrick skin types. They deliver high peak power in short pulses, measured in milliseconds, with cooling that protects the skin while heating the follicle.

Here is what usually happens when an underpowered device is used on your hair:

  1. The follicle is stunned rather than disabled.
  2. The hair sheds for a few weeks, so it looks like the treatment worked.
  3. Within a few months, the hair returns. In some cases, low heat can stimulate growth instead of reducing it.
  4. You are offered more sessions because the first package did not hold.

You are not paying for a cheaper version of the same thing. You are paying for something different.

Why switching clinics restarts your progress

The second cost of price shopping is harder to see on a receipt. Laser hair removal only works on hair in its active growth phase, called anagen. At any moment, only a portion of your hair is in that phase, which is why a course takes six to eight sessions spaced four to eight weeks apart, or eight to twelve for clients with PCOS-related hair growth. I explain the timing in how many treatments laser hair removal takes.

When you stay with one aesthetician, every session builds on the last. I record your fluence, spot size, pulse width and which wavelength I used. I watch how your hair density changes and how your skin responds, and I adjust as the hair gets finer.

When you move between clinics chasing a deal, none of that follows you:

  • The new technician has no record of your past settings and has to start conservatively.
  • Different clinics use different devices, cooling methods and spot sizes, so the treatment pattern is never consistent.
  • Areas get over-treated or under-treated, which shows up later as patchy regrowth.
  • Your session count restarts. Six sessions at three clinics is not eighteen sessions of progress. It is closer to three separate starts.

The lifetime guarantee problem

Many discount offers close the sale with the words "lifetime guarantee." I tell every client the same thing: that is a sales strategy, not biology.

Hormones drive hair growth. A medical-grade laser can turn off the follicles that are active during your course, but your body keeps the ability to wake follicles that were dormant at the time. Pregnancy, menopause, high stress, thyroid changes and PCOS can all bring new hair years after a course ends. I wrote about this honestly in is laser hair removal permanent.

A clinic that promises you will never see another hair is setting you up to feel cheated later. What we promise instead is a realistic plan: a full course of six to eight sessions, long-lasting reduction after that, and the option of a touch-up session down the road if your hormones change.

One client, three years of deals

The client in this story agreed to let me share her numbers. I kept her name and the clinics she visited out of it, because the point is not who she went to. The point is what price shopping cost her.

She wanted full-body hair removal and, like many people, started by searching for the cheapest option. Here is how her three years unfolded, by her own count.

Year one: the $199 full body deal

She bought a $199 full-body package from a coupon site and completed six sessions at a discount spa. The device was IPL, and a different junior staff member treated her on almost every visit. The hair looked finer at first. About three months after her last session, coarse hair was back on her legs and bikini line.

Year two: the $250 deal at a second clinic

Frustrated, she bought a second package at a different clinic for $250. This one used a basic diode laser. After six more sessions, she still had patchy regrowth, plus mild irritation that she put down to poor cooling during treatment.

Year three: the $600 unlimited package

She then bought an unlimited package at a chain salon for $600. Six months later, the chain closed. She was left with half-finished results and no refund.

Her tally after three years

  • Money: $199 plus $250 plus $600 in packages, and more than $1,400 in total once numbing and add-on fees were counted.
  • Time: three years and more than 20 appointments, each with travel and time off.
  • Result: patchy, returning hair on the legs and bikini line, irritated skin, and no clinic that knew her history.

What her course at Distill looked like

When she came to Distill Laser Clinic in North York, she booked a free consultation with me. I assessed her skin type, hair colour, and hair density, and I reviewed her history so I understood what had already been done.

I told her plainly that her three years of deals had not given her a head start. We were starting a proper course. Because she had coarse dark hair on medium skin, I planned six to eight sessions spaced four to eight weeks apart, using the GentleMax Pro for most areas and the Clarity II where her skin tone called for the 1064 nm wavelength.

Here is how it went:

  • Sessions: seven, all performed by me, over nine months.
  • Settings: logged every visit and adjusted upward as her hair grew finer and sparser.
  • Care: written before and after instructions covering sun protection, shaving timing and what to avoid between sessions. See preparation and aftercare.
  • Pricing: clear per-session pricing agreed at the consultation, starting from $55 depending on the area, with no consultation fee. Current prices are on our laser hair removal price list.
  • Result: smooth legs and bikini line, long-lasting reduction, and a plan for a touch-up if she ever needs one.

The lesson is not that discount packages are always a scam. Some clinics run honest promotions on good equipment. The lesson is that the cheapest package is only a bargain if it is the only one you ever have to buy.

"The cheapest laser hair removal is the course you only pay for once. Every restart is a full price you never see on the coupon."

How to compare deals without paying twice

You do not have to pay the most to get a proper course. You do have to ask better questions than "what is the price?" Before you buy any laser hair removal package, deal site or not, check these five things:

  1. Name the device. Ask for the exact machine and look it up. If the answer is IPL, or nobody can tell you, walk away.
  2. Ask who treats you. One experienced provider for the whole course, or whoever is free that day.
  3. Ask what the package really covers. Which areas, how many sessions, and what numbing, cooling or add-ons cost extra.
  4. Ask what happens after the package. Is there a realistic touch-up plan, or a lifetime promise nobody can keep?
  5. Ask for a consultation first. A clinic that will not assess your skin and hair before taking your money is not planning your course. It is selling a voucher.

Frequently asked questions

Is Groupon laser hair removal worth it?

It can be if the clinic names a medical-grade laser, one provider treats you for the whole course, and the package covers a realistic number of sessions. It is usually not worth it when the device is IPL or unnamed, staff change every visit, and you end up buying a second package elsewhere to finish.

Why did my laser hair removal deal stop working after a few months?

Underpowered devices such as IPL can make hair shed for a few weeks without disabling the follicle. Once the hair cycle turns over, the hair returns. A true laser at the right settings reaches the base of the follicle, so the reduction lasts.

Can I switch clinics in the middle of my laser hair removal course?

You can, but expect to lose progress. The new clinic has no record of your settings, uses a different device, and has to start conservatively. If you must switch, bring your treatment history and expect the session count to restart.

Does Distill honour packages bought from other clinics?

No. We cannot take over another clinic's package. We do offer a free consultation where we review what has already been done and plan a full course with clear per-session pricing.

How much does a full course of laser hair removal cost at Distill?

Sessions start from $55 depending on the area, and consultations are always free. Most clients need six to eight sessions, or eight to twelve with PCOS. The current price list for every area is on our laser hair removal cost page.
