What Is the Best Time of Year for Laser Hair Removal in Toronto?
Fall wins, and it is not close. A month-by-month guide to timing your sessions, from someone who has watched every season play out in the treatment room.
The best time of year to start laser hair removal is during the fall and winter months. You will need 6 to 8 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart to achieve optimal results. Starting your journey in September or October gives you exactly enough time to finish your treatment plan and be smooth by the time beach season arrives in Toronto.
Key takeaways
- Fall is the safest and most effective time to begin your treatment plan.
- You must avoid all direct sun exposure for at least two weeks before each session.
- Most people need between 6 and 8 sessions to achieve a long-term hair reduction.
- A full treatment plan takes about 6 to 9 months, so count backwards from June.
- Starting in the summer is possible, but it requires strict sun protection and careful planning.
Hi there. My name is Swaleen Nissan. I am the Lead Medical Aesthetician at Distill Laser Clinic right here in North York. Over the past 20 years, I have worked in the medical aesthetics industry across New York City, Barbados, and Toronto.
Working in this industry for over 20 years has taught me not to take guesses. I have seen it all: summer, winter, fall, and spring. My clients often sit in my treatment room and ask me about the best time of year to start their laser hair removal treatments. Today, I want to share my experience with seasonal timing. I do not rely on guesses. I rely on my experience performing over 2,000 laser treatments with the best machines available in the world. I want to give you my honest advice.
The session math: why you must count backwards from summer
In my treatment room, I always start by explaining the math to my clients. Laser hair removal does not happen in a single visit. Human hair grows in different cycles. The laser can only target hair follicles that are currently in the active growth phase. We call this the Anagen phase.
Because your hair is always at different stages of growth, we have to treat the same area multiple times. This allows us to catch every single hair as it enters the active phase. Most people need 6 to 8 sessions to see a dramatic reduction in hairs. We space these sessions 4 to 6 weeks apart. This spacing is not random. It gives your dormant hair follicles enough time to wake up and enter the active growth phase before your next visit.
If you add up the time, a full treatment plan takes about 6 to 9 months to complete. This is true whether you are treating a small area or committing to full body laser hair removal. If you want smooth skin by June, you have to count backwards. Starting your sessions in September or October means you will finish right as the warm weather arrives in Toronto. You will be ready for the summer heat with minimal maintenance.
Month-by-month guide for Toronto: what starting in each season means
Here is how I break down the seasons for my clients.
Fall: Ideal
September, October, and November are the absolute best months to begin. Your summer tan has faded. You are wearing long pants and sweaters. These clothes naturally protect your skin from the sun. Starting now means your skin is at its natural baseline tone. This allows us to safely use the most effective laser settings to target the root of your hair.
Winter: Still great
December, January, and February are also excellent months to start. Toronto winters mean you spend most of your time indoors. Sun exposure is very low during these months. You still have enough time to get 4 or 5 sessions done before summer arrives. You will notice a dramatic difference by the time the snow melts.
Spring: Last call
March, April, and May are your final chances to start if you want to see a noticeable difference this summer. You will not finish a full package of 6 to 8 sessions before June. However, you will get 2 or 3 sessions done. This will still give you a great head start and make shaving much easier during the hot summer months.
Summer: Possible but limited
June, July, and August are the hardest months for laser treatments. The sun is strong, and people love being outside on patios or at the cottage. You can start in the summer, but we have to be very careful. You will have to follow strict rules about sun protection to keep your skin safe.
Why summer is the hard season
Summer is difficult because laser technology targets melanin. Melanin is the natural pigment that gives your hair and skin its colour. When you spend time in the sun, your skin produces more melanin to protect itself. This is exactly what creates a tan.
If we use a laser on tanned skin, the laser energy might target the extra melanin in your skin instead of the melanin in your hair root. This is dangerous. It can cause burns, blisters, or post-inflammatory changes to your skin colour.
To keep you safe, I require all clients to follow a strict 2-week sun-free rule before their sessions. In the middle of a beautiful Toronto summer, staying completely out of the sun for two weeks is very hard for most people. This is why I always prefer my clients to start in the fall.
"Working in this industry for over 20 years has taught me not to take guesses. Fall wins because the math wins: count 6 to 8 sessions backwards from June, and you land in October."

What I tell clients who want to start in summer anyway
Sometimes a client sits in my chair in July and wants to start immediately. I am always honest with them about the limitations. I tell them that laser is not pain-free. I also tell them that doing it in the summer requires serious commitment to your skin health.
If you start in the summer, you must wear broad-spectrum physical sunscreen every single day. You have to cover the treated areas with clothing when you go outside. You cannot go to the beach and lie out in the sun.
We can safely treat you in the summer if you follow these rules. We also use the best machines in the world to keep you safe. At Distill Laser Clinic, we use two premier platforms: the Cynosure Lutronic Clarity II and the Candela GentleMax Pro. For clients with deeper skin tones or incidental sun exposure, we use the 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser wavelength. You can read more about how wavelengths are matched to skin in my skin tones and hair types guide.
This specific wavelength safely bypasses the surface of the skin and goes deep into the hair root. It is much safer for your skin. But I must be clear: you still cannot have an active sunburn or a fresh tan. I will always assess your skin first to make sure we can proceed safely.
Booking ahead: fall is the busiest starting season
Because fall is the best time of year for laser hair removal, it is also our busiest season. Many people do the math and realize they need to start in October to be ready for the summer.
A pattern I see every fall is a sudden rush of clients trying to book their first sessions. Spots fill up very quickly in September and October. If you are thinking about starting your journey, I recommend booking your consultation by late August. This secures your spot and gets you on the right schedule for summer. We are proud of our 315+ Google reviews, and we want to make sure every single client gets the dedicated time and attention they deserve.

Can I get laser hair removal in summer?
Yes, you absolutely can get treatments during the summer months. However, you must be very careful. You have to keep the treated area completely out of the direct sun. You must wear protective clothing and use SPF 30+ physical sunscreen every day. If you arrive with a sunburn or a fresh tan, we will have to reschedule your appointment for your safety.
How long before my session should I avoid the sun?
You need to avoid all direct sun exposure for at least two full weeks before your appointment. This rule includes tanning beds and laying out at the beach. Your skin needs to be at its natural baseline colour. This ensures the laser energy targets your hair root safely and does not heat the surface of your skin.
Can I use fake tan between sessions?
No, you cannot use fake tan or self-tanning lotions before a session. The laser machine cannot tell the difference between a real tan and a fake tan. It will pick up the dark pigment from the lotion on the surface of your skin. This can lead to surface burns and irritation. Your skin must be perfectly clean and bare.
When should I start to be smooth by summer?
To see the best results by June, you should start your treatments in September or October. A standard treatment plan requires 6 to 8 sessions to achieve long-term hair reduction. Since we space these appointments 4 to 6 weeks apart, starting in the fall gives you the exact amount of time you need to complete the process.
Does winter dryness affect treatment?
Winter air in Toronto can make your skin very dry, flaky, and sensitive. Dry skin does not stop the laser from working, but it can make the treatment feel slightly more uncomfortable. I highly recommend moisturizing your skin daily between your sessions to keep your skin barrier strong. Just remember to come to your actual appointment with clean, bare skin.
How far ahead should I book?
Fall is our busiest time of the year for new laser clients. Spots in September and October book up very fast as people realize they need to start preparing for the following year. Call us at least three to four weeks in advance. This ensures you can secure your preferred day and time for a consultation.
What does laser hair removal cost?
The cost depends entirely on the size of the body area we are treating and the number of sessions you will need. Small areas cost less, while large areas like full legs cost more. We also offer packages to help you save money. Because everyone is different, exact pricing is always confirmed during your complimentary consultation.
