TREATMENT OF ONYCHOMYCOSIS
Oral therapies are available to treat onychomycosis. Terbinafine is the most efficacious and considered first-line treatment. However, Terbinafine is contraindicated in certain patient populations, including patients with liver disease. Average cure rate of only 65.6% after 3 months of therapy with Terbinafine, There is a need for efficacious therapy that does not cause systemic side effects and lacks multiple drug interactions.
The GentleMax Pro can be used to temporarily increase clear nails in patients with nail fungus. Nd: YAG 1064-nm laser can penetrate as deep as the lower nail plate and has been shown to temporarily improve the appearance of the clear nail without significant complications Especially suitable for older patients with low immunity or liver and renal dysfunction
The laser energy penetrates through the toenail, to the nail bed beneath where the fungus is likely also present. This ability to penetrate the full thickness of the toenail is probably what leads to the promising results seen thus far with laser treatment. The result is to utilize heat energy to eliminate the infection.
It may take 6 to 12 months until the nail grows out to determine how successful the treatment was, but when it comes to your feet, it’s worth the wait. Does it hurt? No. The laser does generate some heat as it kills the fungus in the toenail, but it isn't really painful. You may feel some warmth in the toenail area. If you do, we simply move the light energy to another area of the toenail and the warm sensation immediately dissipates.
The recommended protocol to effectively treat toenail fungus is to treat all 10 toes because the fungus can easily spread from toe to toe. Because it’s not always visible to the naked eye, if we only treated the visibly infected toe, fungus could spread back again from the other toes.
On average, our appointments last approximately 30 minutes. We will carefully treat your infected nails to ensure that any pathogens are eliminated and healthy nail growth is promoted. We are committed to providing the best quality laser treatment available to every one of our patients.
